Collectible Canadian Coin Values

For numismatists (coin collectors) who are really trying to make coin collecting more than an interesting hobby, understanding collectible Canadian coin values is a must, especially if you have access to a good deal of that country’s coinage. There are really two approaches to coin collecting as an investment. True numismatists are always looking for that very rare find. Its level of scarcity will be reflected in the market price that it can generate. Finding such valuable, rare Canadian coins can be left to the luck of searching through countless coins in circulation today, or it can be narrowed to purchasing the desired piece through online businesses or auctions, pawn shops, coin conventions, and private dealers. Again, the price you will pay for a rare coin is directly related to its scarcity and coin grading (condition).

Rare and valuable coins fall into different categories. Proof coins are the originals for any new minting. Because there are few of these for each minting, they hold a special value. Error coins are accidental minting errors that were unknowingly released to the public. They can range from $25.00 - $350.00 or much more. Very old coins, except for pennies, were mostly made of silver. They are rare today because of the time that has passed, the wear on them, and the fact that most were melted down to be recycled. In fact, the first Canadian silver coins of 1858 were so light weight that the public disliked them. They were actually sold at a discount to get them onto the market. The rarest Canadian coin in circulation is a 1921 fifty cent coin worth $125,000.

Canadian commemorative coins are valued for their beauty, and while initially purchased for more than their face value, time has a way of making them a better investment. Canada is known worldwide for the striking attractiveness of her “commems,” some of which are actually put into circulation and others which are only souvenirs. Canada is also known for her high quality gold and silver bullion. With a purity of 99.999%, the 1979 gold maple leaf coin is the purest gold on the market. Coin collectors who are interested in purchasing gold and silver for its metal value will need to follow the changing values of the stock market to buy and sell accordingly. Certainly, understanding collectible Canadian coin values will be an asset in deciding at what level you want to pursue this fascinating and potentially lucrative hobby.
